Libraries and Museums
Overview
The Hampton County Library located on 12 Locust Street and the Estill Public Library located at 276 West Third Street both have collections of books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, and audio books. In addition, both libraries have public access computers and laptops to use in the library and wireless connections that work both inside and outside of the buildings. The Bookmobile offers rural service in Hampton County.
Hampton County with its rich historical heritage has a Hampton County Association of Museums. This organization includes the Brunson Museum (phone 803-625-2115), the Hampton Historical Society Museum (phone 803-943-5484), and the Hampton Museum & Visitors Center (phone 803-943-5318). Local artifacts, historic memorabilia and geneology are to be found in all area museums. Two museums are on the National Register of Historic Places - the Old Colored School House and Information Center and the Hampton Museum and Visitors Center.
Library
The Hampton County Library serves the citizens with two branches and a bookmobile. One library is located in Hampton and another in Estill. For more information, please visit the Allendale, Hampton, Jasper Library System.
Museums
The Hampton County Museum in Hampton is located in the old jailhouse. The museum contains an extensive collection of Civil War memorabilia, including various maps and uniforms. Also memorabilia from World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and more. Photographs of the county and its people and their ancestors are also on display.
The Town of Hampton Museum and Visitors' Center is located in an old bank building. The museum contains military artifacts, a children's room, an exhibition of various antique medical equipment donated by local physicians and Watermelon Festival memorabilia. Also, on a regular basis local craftsmen and artisans display their wares on a rotating basis. The museum is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Hampton Colored School was built in 1931 and used to be the only educational facility for the community's black children. The structure replaced a dilapidated one-room school house that dated back to 1922. The facility has been restored and named to both the South Carolina and the National Register of Historic Places. The museum serves as a repository of Black History in Hampton.
