Hampton was incorporated December 23, 1879, as Hampton Courthouse Town.  It is centrally located and is the hub of county business.  It is host to the famous Hampton County Watermelon Festival, which has continued since 1939.  “Main Street” to locals, Lee Avenue has many fine examples of typical Southern architecture.  Small family shops and businesses provide a wide variety of merchandise.  Other attractions on Lee Avenue include the Town Clock and the renovated Palmetto Theater.  The theater is home to many fine productions which showcase a wealth of local talent.  The Nell Lightsey Park is also an attraction and is located adjacent to the museum.

The long hunting season brings many non-residents to Hampton.  The county is noted for excellent deer, duck, and turkey hunting.

Hampton boasts three outstanding museums:  The Old Colored Schoolhouse and Museum, the Hampton County Historical Museum, and the Hampton Museum and Visitors’ Center.

Stop by the Town Hall or the Hampton Museum and Visitors’ Center for a free historical walking tour and a wealth of additional information.
