This is approximately 42 miles from Port Royal and 70 miles from Augusta, Georgia. Shortly afterward, a town was laid out straddling the road to Hickory Hill, and the town of Varnville was born. Its post office opened in 1872. Varnville’s history is intertwined with the logging industry, agriculture, and the railroad.
Today, as you travel the Lowcountry on US Highway 278, you may stop in town and enjoy a regionally proclaimed seafood meal at Lowcountry Seafood then browse through Market Square, an up-scale mini-mall in the center of town. It houses The Chocolate Tree and additional galleries, art, rugs, jewelry, and Christmas decorations. The Nut Hut, Books Ahoy, and more shops make this an exciting stopover for unique gifts or self-pampering.
Varnville is also home to the Hampton Regional Medical Center. A ground breaking ceremony took place on December 6, 2006 at the site of the new 80,000 square ft. hospital. For more information about the hospital, please visit their website at www.hamptonregional.org
