Hugh B. Gray is a graduate of Clemson University, Class of ’64, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agronomy and as a ROTC “Distinguished Military Graduate”. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry upon graduation. He was employed as Assistant County Agent in Greenwood County, SC, 1964-1965. He served in the U. S. Army at Fort Benning, Georgia and 2nd Division, Korea, in 1966-1967. He returned to Greenwood County Extension Service in 1968. He was employed with Hampton County Extension Service from 1977-2003, serving as Extension Director for six area counties from 1993-2003 in which he retired from Extension in 2003 with 30 years of service. He attends Beech Branch Baptist Church in Luray, South Carolina.
Other Accomplishments:
- Served in the U. S. Army Reserve for 23 years and retired in 1990.
- Served with the S. C. State Guard from 1990 to 2000 in volunteer status.
- Served as volunteer with the Hampton County Watermelon Festival from 1980 to 2003, serving for 15 years as Chairman.
- Campaign Chairman, Hampton Regional Medical Center, from 2006 to present.
- Elected to Hampton County Council in November 2006.
- Elected as Chairman of County Council in January 2007 upon taking office.
- Only living member of Smyrna Baptist Church, Allendale County.
Goals:
- Finding alternative revenue sources to reduce the tax burden on property owners
- Reducing the cost of county government
- Positioning Hampton County for the future by stimulating economic development
